History
A group of nine persons met in the local public school in February, 1891 and organized the Seven Springs Missionary Baptist Church. Seven of these people were local citizens. One of the others was Rev. B. L. Finch who became the first Pastor. Services were held once a month.
Work began immediately to erect a building on West Spring Street for worship services. The first service in the new church was on August 1, 1892. Eight new members were added that Sunday.
For years the church shared a pastor with three other churches. In 1965 full time services began.
The church also shared its building with the Seven Springs Methodist congregation. This worked well with a union Sunday School and alternating Sunday worship services. In 1946, the Methodist congregational moved into their own facility.
In August, 1950 a parsonage was built next to the church. Then in 1961 construction of a new brick church was begun. The financial situation dictated that the sanctuary and education units be completed in stages. At this time the parsonage was being used for classrooms, so the education unit was completed first. It was utilized beginning November 1, 1961.
In July, 1962 services began in the sanctuary, which was later completed with carpet and new pews. In 1990, stain glass windows were installed. All of the windows were donated. New carpet and light fixtures were also added.
In 1979, the church voted to build a new brick parsonage. The old parsonage was moved, attached to the back of the education unit and used for Sunday School rooms.
On July 7, 1998, the church was incorporated and became known as the Seven Springs Baptist Church.
As the membership increased, it became apparent that more space was needed fore education and fellowship. The old parsonage attachment needed replacing. The Building Committee worked on this project and was prepared to present a plan to the members in September 1999.
However, Hurricane Floyd hit on September 15, 1999 and flooding began. That week-end, village residents moved out to escape the rising water. There had been floods periodically throughout the years but never like this one. Water reached the height of about 3 1/2 feet in the sanctuary.
Repairs were made with the help of the North Carolina Baptist Men and other volunteers. Services were returned to the church in December 1999. In the meantime worship services ad other activities were held in the Neuse Baptist Association Resource Training Center.
The pastor and his family moved back into the repaired parsonage. A few months later they moved into a home which they purchased. Eventually, the parsonage was sold.
During this time, the church members gave considerable thought and prayer to relocating the church. In November 1999 they voted to build a new facility out of the flood zone.
Land outside of the village on Highway 55 was donated for this purpose. On October 15, 2000 a ground breaking ceremony was held. The new church was completed and the first service was held on February 3, 2002.
Other additions have been landscaping, a church sign, and an outbuilding. This building is for cooking, and storage of the Disaster Recovery Trailer and other equipment.
